Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that people who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs should be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
